Dr. Deal stumbled her way into science while pursing her undergraduate at North Carolina State University, but it was not until she worked at Baylor College of Medicine in the lab of Dr. Shinya Yamamoto that she realized she loved the fruit fly and genetics. She always knew that teaching would be a critical part of her academic career, so she pursued both teaching and the genetics of neurobiology at the UPenn with Dr. Amita Sehgal. She is very excited to be starting as an Assistant Professor at Mercer University in August of 2025.
She will be bringing her love of fruit flies with her!
The lab is seeking motivated undergraduates interested in studying neurobiology and sleep using the fruit fly.
Check out the "Join the Lab" section to express interest.
